Artist Statement

I have been involved in the arts for over 30 yrs. My initial interest was in functional pottery. I later began doing Raku full time. Health problems required a reinventing of myself about 5 yrs. ago, when I started painting. In the past 3 years, I have developed a mixed media technique that allows me to use the carving and etching experience built up over my years working with clay. When combined with the colors available to me as a painter, I feel that I have found my home in the art field.

My work is often described as primitive, or outsider art. I am self taught as an painter. I admit to a child like tendency to enjoy breaking "the rules" of art.

A complete detachment of my retina and the subsequent surgery have left me with a very distorted image in my right eye. I use that distortion in some of my work. I believe that it is the obligation of the artist to attempt to show the world as he or she sees it.

When at my best, I manage to put all thoughts aside and merely react to the color and the image as it evolves. While I am a very politically active person, it is not the focus of my art. My desire is that my art be a reflection of my sub-conscious inner thoughts, nothing more, nothing less. My primary interest are always color, texture, and movement. Actual subject matter is usually irrelevant to me. MY work is not designed to make you think. If is intended to make you feel.

Due to the nature of my materials, all of the mixed media images are 8 x 10 or smaller. They are floated on a white textured background, and framed under glass to 11x14 or 16x20. All images have torn edges, which I believe adds to the look that I am seeking.

All of my mixed media images are available as limited edition, signed and numbered laser prints in editions of 100. These prints are available for $25 each, unframed and unmated. I have recently developed a method of framing these prints in a manner that is easily confused with the original. All mixed media images are now available on a raised, ragged edge material, mounted on a textured white paper, and framed in a black metal 11 x 14 frame, under glass, for a cost of $75. All mixed media images are also now available as note cards. The cost on the cards is $10 for 4 cards plus cost of shipping.

One should anticipate approximately $10 to $25 for boxing and shipping on framed art. For prints, unframed and unmated, $5 should cover the shipping.

Please keep in mind that prices that you see on my work in your local gallery will reflect the fact that the shipping has already been paid. My prices are the same in a gallery as they are directly ordered from me. Support your local gallery whenever you can. If your gallery does not carry my work, tell them they should!

I have recently contracted with Fine Art America (www.fineartamerica.com ) and they will be handling all of my work as giclee prints on either paper or canvas, and can produce a wonderful larger version of my work. All arrangements for size, quality, etc. as well as payment, shipping and handling, etc. are handled directly by Fine Art America.

I also have a marketing plan that can earn you any piece of work that you might desire, or can serve as an effective fund raising plan for your non-profit organization. Contact me for details!
